A total of 173 personnel from the Assam Police and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were injured during clashes that broke out on December 22 and 23 in areas under the Kheroni Police Station in West Karbi Anglong district. The Assam Police confirmed the figures and said the situation turned violent when security forces came face to face with protesters over local issues linked to land and administration.

According to official information, 139 of the injured security personnel received first aid at the spot itself. Another 33 personnel had to be shifted to different hospitals for further medical treatment. While most injuries were described as minor, the large number has highlighted the intensity of the confrontations that took place over the two days.

Police officials said that the situation in Kheroni had been tense for some time due to local grievances. These grievances are understood to be related mainly to land disputes and certain administrative actions that had led to dissatisfaction among sections of the residents. Tensions came to the surface when protests turned aggressive, and security forces were deployed to maintain law and order.

During the operation, police and CRPF personnel reportedly faced stone-throwing and other forms of resistance from the crowd. In several instances, security forces had to shield themselves while trying to bring the situation under control. This is believed to be one of the main reasons behind the heavy number of injuries recorded among the personnel on duty.

Authorities said the clashes unfolded over different locations within the Kheroni area. Each time, additional forces were rushed in to prevent the situation from spreading further. Senior officers from the district police and administration were also present on the ground to monitor developments. Their primary focus was to restore calm and prevent any escalation that could lead to more damage or injuries.

By the end of December 23, law enforcement agencies said they had managed to bring the situation under control. Regular patrolling was stepped up, and security deployment was strengthened in sensitive pockets to prevent fresh flare-ups. Officials described the situation as “tense but under control,” noting that even though the atmosphere remained sensitive for some time, active steps were taken to maintain peace.
