As many as 438 personnel of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), Assam Rifles and the National Security Guard (NSG) died by suicide during the last three years beginning 2023, while seven cases of fratricide were also reported during the same period, the Union government informed Parliament on Tuesday.

The information was shared by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha. The data covers the period from 2023 to 2025 and includes forces such as the CRPF, BSF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, Assam Rifles and NSG.

According to the figures, 157 suicides were reported in 2023, followed by 148 cases in 2024 and 133 cases in 2025, taking the total to 438. The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) recorded the highest number of suicides at 159, followed by the Border Security Force (BSF) with 120 cases. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) reported 60 suicides, while the SSB recorded 35, ITBP 32, Assam Rifles 28, and NSG four cases during the three-year period.

The data also showed seven fratricide incidents in total. Two cases were reported in 2023, one in 2024 and four in 2025. CRPF and Assam Rifles reported two cases each, while BSF, ITBP and SSB reported one case each. No fratricide incidents were reported in CISF or NSG during this period.

Responding to concerns, the government said several steps are being taken to address stress and mental health issues among personnel. These include counselling services, regular interaction with senior officers, yoga and meditation sessions, stress management programmes, and improved leave and welfare measures.
