The North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) on Wednesday opened four gates of the Doyang Hydro Electric Project in Nagaland after continuous heavy rainfall caused a sharp rise in water levels. The decision was taken as a precautionary step to release excess water, but it has raised concerns of possible flooding in parts of Assam, particularly in the low-lying areas of Golaghat district.
According to officials, the water released from the dam is expected to flow into the Dhansiri River through the Doyang. This natural course of water has created fear among residents of Golaghat, where several villages are located close to the riverbanks and are prone to seasonal flooding.
NEEPCO has issued a public advisory asking people living near the riverbanks to remain alert and avoid venturing into the river. The advisory stressed that the situation may turn risky as water levels in the Dhansiri River are likely to increase. The Golaghat district administration has echoed the warning, urging people to cooperate with authorities and strictly follow safety guidelines.
An official from the disaster management team in Golaghat said, “We are on high alert. Teams are ready to respond in case water enters villages. People in flood-prone areas must remain cautious.”
The Golaghat district administration has directed all concerned departments, including disaster response units, health services, and police, to stay prepared. Relief camps have been identified, and officials have been asked to remain available around the clock. Emergency boats and rescue teams have also been kept on standby.
