The Odisha government on Monday extended both the curfew and suspension of internet services in Cuttack following violent clashes during Durga idol immersion last week. The curfew, imposed under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 163, and the internet suspension, which now runs until 7 pm on October 7, aim to prevent further flare-ups in the city.

Authorities reported two incidents of violence in Cuttack’s Dargha Bazar area between Friday and Sunday, leaving at least 31 people injured, including 10 police personnel. Commissioner of Police S Dev Datta Singh said that Sunday’s clashes may have been triggered by rumours on social media regarding the health of one of the injured, despite the person receiving proper treatment. “The message was intended to spread hate among communities,” he said.

The state government expressed concern over the misuse of social media platforms and warned that violation of the curfew or internet suspension orders would be dealt with under relevant laws. The internet suspension does not affect government networks, including banking, railways, and OSWAN services.
