Assam-Meghalaya border tensions: Magisterial inquiry ordered into death of Lt. Oriwel Timung

The West Karbi Anglong district administration has announced a magisterial inquiry into the death of Lt. Oriwel Timung of Tapat village, who lost his life in a violent clash along the Assam-Meghalaya border on October 9, 2025. The inquiry, ordered will investigate the incident and collect statements from all concerned individuals and organizations.

The clash occurred when tensions between two groups escalated over paddy harvesting along the border. Villagers from Tapat opposed a group from Meghalaya who were reportedly harvesting paddy in the disputed area. The confrontation turned violent, leaving Oriwel Timung dead and another person injured. Police used tear gas to control the crowd. The injured person has been hospitalized, and Timung’s body was sent for post-mortem. The conflict comes after a week of rising tensions in the area and despite a meeting of the Inter State Border Peace Committee on October 6, where both sides agreed to suspend agricultural and development activities until peace was restored.

To examine the matter closely, the inquiry will be held at Khanduli BOP on October 17, 2025, from 11 am onwards. Villagers, NGOs, and concerned individuals are requested to submit their written statements. Senior police officers, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Border), and the Officer in Charge of Hamren Police Station will oversee arrangements at the BOP. Adequate police personnel will be deployed to manage the crowd, while an Executive Magistrate will supervise law and order during the proceedings.

Local village heads, including Sarkari Gaon Burhas and Pradhans, as well as members of the Border Peace Committee of Tapat village, have been asked to attend with relevant documents. An interpreter and transport support have been arranged for smooth conduct of the inquiry.
