The Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) has raised serious questions about the motives of the Assam government in launching a statewide campaign for late singer Zubeen Garg. The campaign, titled “Moi Zubeen, Ami Zubeen” (I am Zubeen, We are Zubeen), was recently announced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and is set to begin on October 23.
AJYCP Central Committee President Palash Changmai, in a statement shared on Facebook, expressed concern that the ruling party’s move could overshadow a people-driven movement seeking justice for Zubeen Garg. “The people of Assam have spontaneously built a digital movement demanding justice for Zubeen Garg. Now, in a bizarre move, the ruling party, under the Chief Minister’s leadership, has announced that it will lead a campaign for Zubeen Garg’s justice under the slogan ‘Moi Zubeen, Ami Zubeen’—apparently to overshadow or dilute the people-led movement,” he wrote.
Changmai emphasized that justice for Zubeen must first come from the government itself, stating, “First of all, justice for the beloved singer must come from the government itself, since it is the government that has been running things all along.”
The AJYCP leader also highlighted the need for political parties to genuinely reflect Zubeen Garg’s ideals. Zubeen, he said, had always stood against policies like the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and supported a society united beyond caste, creed, and religion. “Simply saying ‘I am Zubeen’ must be backed by Zubeen Garg’s personality and ideals. The BJP should fully embody the singer’s ideals before launching any campaign; otherwise, it risks intellectual hypocrisy and political maneuvering,” Changmai added.
He further questioned the appropriateness of the BJP’s participation in a movement that originated organically among the people. “Why is it problematic for the BJP to participate in Assam’s people-driven ‘Justice for Zubeen Garg’ movement?” he asked, implying that the campaign could divert attention from genuine grassroots activism.
