BJP faces backlash for misspelling ‘Justice’ as #Justic during Zubeen Garg campaign

In his speech at the event, BJP State President Dilip Saikia said, “We are also fans of Zubeen. Every BJP member wants Zubeen to get justice. Even after doing everything we can, we are saddened by his demise, and we will continue to demand justice for him.” However, the misspelling overshadowed much of the message.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) faced widespread criticism and online ridicule after a spelling error appeared on a banner during their campaign seeking justice for late singer Zubeen Garg. The banner, meant to express solidarity with fans demanding justice, went viral for displaying the word “Justice” incorrectly as #Justic, sparking backlash from netizens and opposition parties alike.

The error came to light during a BJP-led campaign titled “Moi o Zubeen Onuragi, Ami o Zubeen Onuragi” (I am also a Zubeen fan, We are also Zubeen fans). The event, organised to join the growing movement demanding justice for the late singer, was attended by several senior party members including Jayanta Malla Baruah and other BJP leaders. However, instead of drawing appreciation for their participation, the campaign quickly drew attention for the glaring typo on the main banner.

Images and videos of the misspelled word spread rapidly across social media, with many users mocking the party for the mistake. Several fans called it “insensitive” and “careless,” especially given the emotional nature of the ongoing justice campaign for Zubeen Garg, who passed away last month under circumstances still under investigation.

The hashtag #JusticForZubeen soon began trending on social media, with thousands of users sarcastically using it to criticise the BJP’s oversight. Some fans pointed out the irony that while the original hashtag #JusticeForZubeenGarg had already crossed over two million posts, the ruling party misspelled the central word of the campaign itself.

A Facebook user commented, “If they cannot even spell ‘justice’ correctly, how can we trust them to deliver it?” Others accused the BJP of trying to “politicise” a deeply emotional issue.

The opposition quickly seized the opportunity to criticise the BJP. Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) leader Lurin Jyoti Gogoi said, “Do not perform theatrics or politicise in the name of Zubeen. The people of Assam are mourning, not campaigning.”

Meanwhile, the All Assam Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) issued a stern warning to political parties, stating that anyone who attempts to exploit Zubeen Garg’s name for political gain would face public resentment. “The people of Assam want justice for Zubeen, not slogans for political mileage,” an AJYCP leader said.
