Following the recent violence in Baksa, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said that the unfortunate incident began after some journalists reportedly called people for interviews, leading to a large gathering that later turned violent.

Sarma, who visited Baksa to assess the situation and meet the affected families, said that the state government is providing full medical support to those injured in the violence. “The people who were injured in the Baksa violence are being treated properly. Some have been referred to AIIMS hospital for better care,” the Chief Minister said.

He further said that some villagers had fled their homes out of fear. “I have requested the village heads to call back the people who have left and to help the police in the investigation process. The inquiry will be conducted by a magistrate to ensure a fair probe,” he added.

Explaining how the violence took place, Sarma said, “Some journalists had called people for interviews, and that is how the crowd gathered. When people started coming together, the situation escalated.” He stressed that responsible reporting is vital and that “journalism should aim to maintain peace, not disturb it.”

Referring to the Zubeen Garg case, the Chief Minister clarified that the state was not aware that the five accused in the late singer’s death case were brought to Baksa jail. “We came to know only after the order was passed. These five accused were brought here after 14 days of SIT custody. This should have been seen as an achievement since justice is progressing, but instead, the news was wrongly reported,” he said.

Sarma expressed disappointment over some media reports suggesting that the accused were granted bail. “In reality, they were sent to jail. Journalists should have highlighted that justice was being ensured, not the opposite,” he remarked.

The Chief Minister also said that most villagers supported the district administration and police, and he visited the site to stand with the people during this difficult time. “The people of this village supported the SP and DC, yet violence took place. I came here to assure everyone that the government stands with them,” he stated.

Appealing for calm, Sarma urged the people of Assam to have faith in the law. “Even if the government makes mistakes, the law will never be wrong. The High Court will ensure justice. We have decided to set up a fast-track court in the Zubeen Garg case. Hearings will be held every day, and the chargesheet will be filed on time,” he said.

Speaking on Zubeen Garg’s legacy, Sarma said that the singer always wanted peace and unity in Assam. “When Zubeen was alive, his fans were different. After his death, many new people are claiming to be his fans. Some are trying to use this movement for personal gain, not for justice. We should remember Zubeen for his love for Assam. He wanted a peaceful and developed state,” he said.

The Chief Minister said that every constituency in Assam would soon have a music school in memory of the late singer. “We will also plant Nahar trees in homes across Assam to honour Zubeen’s memory. He believed the show must go on — and we will continue his unfinished work,” Sarma said.

He also said that the late singer’s cremation ground would be developed as ‘Zubeen Kshetra’, as proposed by Zubeen’s wife, Garima Garg.

Speaking on the controversy over tree cutting in Dighalipukhuri, Sarma denied the allegations. “Not a single tree has been cut. I had personally promised Zubeen that no trees would be harmed, and I stand by that promise. Some people are spreading false claims on social media, but I can assure everyone that the trees are intact,” he stated.

Sarma said, “We loved Zubeen from our hearts. Justice will surely be given to him. I promise the people of Assam that I will ensure justice for Zubeen Garg,” the Chief Minister said with conviction.
