An official Right to Information (RTI) reply from the Embassy of India in Brasília has revealed that over ₹9 crore was spent on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Brazil in July 2025 to attend the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The information was shared in response to an appeal filed by Shri Ajay Basudev Bose under the RTI Act, 2005.

The detailed expenditure, mentioned in letter number BRA/RTI/551/1/2024 dated October 15, 2025, was provided by Suraj Ananta Jadhav, First Secretary and First Appellate Authority at the Indian Embassy in Brasília. The reply lists specific categories of expenses incurred during the high-profile foreign visit.

According to the official figures, hotel arrangements alone cost ₹3,04,13,551.47, while venue charges came to ₹57,68,649.82. The reply also stated that transport arrangements amounted to ₹1,89,69,860.90, and miscellaneous expenditure was ₹3,39,44,710.01. However, the embassy noted that details of the Prime Minister’s daily allowance and community reception expenses were not compiled separately.

The total expenditure from the available data adds up to more than ₹9 crore, reflecting the significant costs involved in organizing an international diplomatic visit of this scale.

In the same reply, the embassy clarified the reason behind the delay in providing the RTI information. It stated that the public authority did not have access to the RTI MIS Portal due to geo-restrictions, which caused unavoidable delays. The information, it said, was shared as soon as access was restored.

The reply also included the standard clause advising the applicant that if he is not satisfied with the appeal order, he may file a second appeal under Section 19(3) of the RTI Act within 90 days to the Central Information Commission (CIC) in New Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi had attended the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6, 2025, where he met leaders from Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa. The visit was part of India’s continuing engagement with the BRICS nations on issues of trade, development, and global cooperation.
