Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has issued a strict warning to all visitors at Zubeen Kshetra, the memorial of the late singer Zubeen Garg in Sonapur. The Chief Minister said that anyone breaking the law at the site will face serious consequences.
Speaking about the situation at the memorial, Sarma said, “We have made the law and the SOPs. It is the duty of the people to follow them. If anyone violates the SOPs or disrupts the environment there, strict action will be taken as per law.” He urged everyone to maintain peace, respect the place, and follow the rules. He said that police will not stop visitors unnecessarily, but the law and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) must be followed at all times.
The Chief Minister’s warning comes after reports of unruly behaviour by a few visitors, which disturbed the otherwise calm and solemn atmosphere at the cremation site. Zubeen Kshetra has become a place of pilgrimage for thousands of fans who come to pay tribute to the iconic singer. Dr Sarma reminded everyone that the site holds immense emotional significance for the people of Assam, and maintaining discipline is essential to honor his memory.
Authorities have repeatedly requested visitors to act with restraint, avoid creating chaos, and ensure that their behaviour does not hurt others or violate the law. The government has prepared clear SOPs to guide the public on how to visit the memorial safely and respectfully. These rules are intended to ensure that everyone can pay their respects in a peaceful environment.
Meanwhile, the Assam Government has extended the visiting hours at Zubeen Kshetra by an hour, keeping the site open daily from 6 AM to 11 PM. This decision was made following a request from the Zubeen Garg Fan Club, which had appealed to keep the memorial open until midnight. Although the government did not approve a full extension until 12 AM, the extra hour allows more fans to visit and pay homage to the late singer.
Officials have also clarified that visitors under the influence of alcohol or any intoxicating substances are strictly prohibited from entering or remaining on the premises. Consumption, serving, or distribution of alcohol is strictly banned inside and around the memorial grounds. The District Magistrate’s office stated that these measures were implemented in consultation with local residents and stakeholders to preserve the sanctity of the cremation ground. Authorities urged all visitors to cooperate and maintain a peaceful and dignified atmosphere while paying tribute to the beloved star.
