A deep depression in the southeast Bay of Bengal is expected to turn into a strong cyclonic storm, triggering weather changes across large parts of India this week. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that while the main impact will be felt along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, several northeastern states, including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur, and Tripura, may see rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds over the next few days.

According to the IMD, the deep depression was centred near latitude 11.4°N and longitude 86.6°E, around 670 kilometres west of Port Blair, as of Sunday evening. It is moving slowly towards the west-northwest at about 8 kilometres per hour. Weather officials expect it to strengthen into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm by Tuesday morning, October 28. The system is likely to make landfall near Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh, bringing wind speeds up to 90–100 kmph, with gusts touching 110 kmph.

Heavy rainfall and very strong winds are forecast along the coasts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Tamil Nadu and Telangana. The IMD has also warned of possible flooding in low-lying areas due to storm surges reaching up to one metre above normal tide levels. Damage to crops, trees, and temporary structures is expected in vulnerable coastal districts.

Fishermen have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea, and all fishing activities in the Bay of Bengal have been suspended until October 29. Coastal authorities have been asked to stay on alert and keep evacuation teams ready in case the storm changes course or intensifies further.

Meanwhile, another weather system is active over the east-central Arabian Sea. The depression there is moving slowly southwards at a speed of about 7 kilometres per hour. It is expected to continue towards the southeast over the next 24 hours.

Because of this system, heavy rainfall and strong winds are likely in Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa, Maharashtra, and southern parts of Gujarat. The sea conditions are likely to remain rough to very rough, and fishermen along the western coast have also been warned to avoid venturing into the sea till October 27.

Although the Bay of Bengal cyclone is several hundred kilometres away from the Northeast, the region will experience indirect effects due to changes in wind patterns. Moisture-laden easterly and northeasterly winds will bring intermittent rain and thunderstorms in several states during the week.

From October 26 to 30, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, and Tripura are likely to experience varying degrees of rainfall. The IMD forecast says the first two days will see light rain at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Mizoram, while Tripura will remain mostly dry. On the third and fourth days, most parts of the region are expected to get light to moderate showers, while the fifth day could bring heavier spells in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya.
