A massive protest rally was held in Moran on Saturday, where thousands from the Chutia community gathered to demand Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The rally, held at Ushapur playground and joined by people from Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Nazira sub-division, marked a major escalation in the community’s long-standing fight for tribal recognition.
Leaders of various Chutia organisations accused both the state and central governments of giving repeated assurances but taking no concrete steps on the matter. They said the community has waited for decades, maintaining peaceful democratic movements, yet their demand remains unresolved.
After the meeting, protesters carried out a large march along National Highway-37 in Moran town, raising slogans like “We will die but we will achieve tribal status” and “No ST, No Rest, No Vote.” Demonstrators declared that if the ST status is not granted before the 2026 Assembly elections, they will intensify their agitation across the state.
