TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma has criticised the continued delay in holding the Village Council elections in Tripura. In a social media post shared today, he said the State government has again sought more time in the Supreme Court, and this delay is causing injustice to the Tiprasa people.
Debbarma said that the government’s lawyer has asked for more time to file a reply regarding the matter in the Supreme Court. He claimed that the government has no valid reason for not conducting the elections on time. He also reminded everyone that the last Village Council elections were held nearly ten years ago. According to him, such a long delay is unfair and has blocked democratic rights of the tribal population in the state.
He wrote that the continuous postponement is denying justice to the Tiprasa people, who have been demanding timely elections and proper representation. He said, “The government advocate has again asked for more time. They have no real justification for delaying the VC elections. Justice is being denied to our people.”
The case, registered as W.P.(C) No. 786/2025 — Pradyot Deb Burman vs Union of India, is scheduled before the Supreme Court. The matter was initially listed for hearing on November 3, 2025, before a Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India and Justice K. Vinod Chandran. However, a fresh request has been placed by the advocate representing the State of Tripura seeking an adjournment of two weeks.
In the letter submitted to the Supreme Court Registrar, Advocate Shuvodeep Roy stated that he entered appearance for the State on October 31, 2025, and complete instructions for filing the reply are still awaited. Therefore, he requested that the matter be postponed and listed after two weeks. He also asked for the letter to be circulated before the Judges so that they do not have to go through the case papers at this stage.
Along with the letter, a formal application for adjournment has also been filed. The application mentions the case details, the request for a two-week postponement and the reason that a reply affidavit is yet to be filed. It also states that this is the first adjournment request from the State government side.
For the tribal population in Tripura, the Village Council polls are very important because these elections decide the leadership and administration within tribal areas under the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). Many groups in the tribal belt feel that without timely elections, local development, welfare schemes and decision-making are being affected. They also say that a democratic system must function regularly and that delaying elections can weaken the voice of indigenous communities.
TIPRA Motha has been raising this issue for many months. The party has repeatedly said that elections must be held soon to protect the constitutional and democratic rights of the tribal people. The party also believes that the delay is political and has accused the government of avoiding elections intentionally.
