Assam’s cricket icon Uma Chetry, who recently met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi, was not welcomed at Guwahati airport as expected.
Speaking on the incident, Assam BJP President Dilip Saikia said, “I got to know about the news of Uma Chetry not being honoured and welcomed in Assam. This is very sad and disappointing.” He added that he personally did not receive any information regarding her arrival, and had he known, he would have gone to receive her.
Saikia also spoke with Assam Cricket Association President Taranga Gogoi, who clarified that Uma Chetry left Delhi for Guwahati on the previous evening at 6 pm. “It is the responsibility of the BCCI to arrange her travel, including from the airport to her home in Bokakhat. Unfortunately, this information was not shared with us, so we were unaware of her arrival,” Gogoi said.
Plans were originally made to felicitate Uma Chetry in Guwahati in the presence of Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. However, as she left directly for Bokakhat, the felicitation could not take place. Saikia assured that Uma Chetry will be honoured in Guwahati once she returns in the coming days. “As an Assamese, we will help and support her as much as we can,” he added.
