The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, one of India’s most famous sports venues, will soon be dismantled to make way for a new and modern Sports City. According to official sources in the Sports Ministry, the plan is part of a larger effort to modernise India’s sports infrastructure as the country continues to prepare its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
The Sports City will be built on the same land where the current stadium stands and will spread across about 102 acres. Officials said that the new complex will include modern training facilities, world-class competition venues, and centres that focus on athlete performance and fitness. The idea is to create an environment similar to what other countries have built for major global events.
At present, experts from the Sports Ministry are studying models from countries like Qatar and Australia, both known for their advanced sports infrastructure and planning. However, no fixed timeline has been given for when the construction will begin. Officials mentioned that work will start only after all assessments are completed and the final blueprint receives approval from higher authorities.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, built for the 1982 Asian Games, has been a landmark in Delhi for more than forty years. It was also renovated ahead of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. With a seating capacity of nearly 60,000, the stadium has hosted several important sports events, including athletics, football matches, and large cultural and national functions such as Independence Day celebrations. It has also been the home venue for India’s national athletics team and an important part of the country’s sporting identity.
Earlier this year, the stadium hosted the World Para Athletics Championships, for which a new mondo track was installed at a cost of nearly ₹30 crore. The event was seen as a successful example of India’s ability to manage world-class sporting competitions.
Officials believe that the new Sports City will bring together training, competitions, and athlete welfare under one integrated space. The proposed design aims to make it easier for Indian athletes to train and perform at international standards without needing to travel abroad for preparation.
The project is expected to be one of the biggest steps in India’s journey toward becoming a global sports hub. Once completed, the Sports City could become a model for other states to follow and might play a key role in supporting India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games.
