Assam is gearing up for a major cultural tribute to honor the late legendary singer, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg on November 18, marking what would have been his 53rd birthday. This is the first birthday remembrance since Zubeen’s sudden passing in September, and the event promises to be a significant moment for the people of Assam.

Titled “Kanchanjungha – Sanskriti Houk Maitreyir Mantra”, the program has been organized by the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and reflects the deep connection that Assam shares with Zubeen Garg’s music and his lifelong dedication to the state’s cultural identity. The tribute aims not only to celebrate his artistic contributions but also to highlight the demand for accountability surrounding the circumstances of his death.

Speaking about the event, APCC president Gaurav Gogoi said, “This 18th of November will be the first birth anniversary of our beloved Zubeen Garg since his passing. We are organising this central tribute, ‘Kanchanjungha – Culture as the mantra of friendship’, not only to celebrate his art but also to honour his lifelong commitment to Assam’s culture. Zubeen Garg stood for justice, creativity, and the pride of Assam—values the Congress continues to uphold.”

The Assam Congress has been at the forefront of campaigning for a transparent investigation into Zubeen Garg’s death. Since his demise in Singapore, the party has organized peace marches, justice rallies, digital campaigns, and public engagements to mobilize support for the “Justice for Zubeen Garg” movement.

The musical program itself is set to feature performances by prominent artists including Joi Baruah, Manas Robin, Maitreyee Patar, Rupam Bhuyan, Sweety Das, Richa Bhardwaj, and Trishna Devi. Writers, filmmakers, and many close friends and family members of Zubeen Garg will also participate, making the event a gathering of Assam’s entire cultural community.

In keeping with Zubeen Garg’s environmental advocacy and his fondness for the Nahor tree, the Congress has also announced a state-wide initiative to plant Nahor saplings in every booth across Assam. Gaurav Gogoi stated, “As a mark of respect for Zubeen’s deep love for nature, we are blending cultural homage with progressive action through this plantation drive.”
