Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, claiming that the state government is attempting to include voters from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar in Assam’s electoral rolls ahead of the 2026 assembly elections. Speaking at a party event in Dhubri, Gogoi said Sarma had become “the biggest liability for the BJP” and accused him of “trying hard to include the names of people from other states in the voters list.”
The comments come in the backdrop of the Election Commission’s recent directive for a special summary revision of the electoral rolls, with January 1, 2026, set as the qualifying date. The exercise is officially intended to update and verify the voter list, ensuring accuracy before the elections.
Gogoi urged political parties, media organisations, and civic groups to remain vigilant, warning that “people from other states” should not be allowed to influence the outcome of Assam’s polls. He stressed that the Congress party’s goal was not merely to increase its numbers but “to come to power to protect and secure the interests of the people.”
The APCC president also suggested that Chief Minister Sarma is facing political challenges and claimed that he had reached out to AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal for support. Gogoi added that it was “quite possible that after a few days Asaduddin Owaisi may also come to Assam in a bid to bail him out.”
Positioning the opposition as prepared for the 2026 assembly elections, Gogoi highlighted ongoing alliance-building efforts. He said eight parties the Congress, CPI(M), Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI, CPI(ML), Jatiya Dal–Asom and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference have agreed to fight the BJP jointly in next year’s polls.
