As the Assam Assembly elections approach, the Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) has stepped up its organisational activities raising concerns over alleged attempts by the ruling BJP to manipulate the voter list. AJP president Lurinjyoti Gogoi claimed that evidence from a survey in Bihar proves that the Special Revision (SIR) process is flawed and potentially fraudulent.
The party held a crucial Central Executive Committee meeting at its Guwahati office, attended by central office bearers. Sources said the meeting focused on election preparations, opposition unity, and the party’s strategic role in forming a broader anti-BJP alliance. During the meeting, it was also decided that former MP Rajen Gohain would be assigned a key responsibility within the party organisation to strengthen its grassroots reach.
Speaking to the media, Gogoi alleged that the BJP intends to bring in 5,000 to 10,000 outside voters into each constituency through the Special Revision of the electoral roll. “The Bihar survey clearly shows how such processes can be manipulated. The SIR in Assam appears to be fake,” Gogoi said. He further said that if opposition parties remain united, there is a strong chance of defeating the BJP government in the upcoming elections.
The AJP chief also commented on the controversial death of noted singer and artist Zubeen Garg. Gogoi questioned whether the alleged murder occurred with the Chief Minister’s knowledge, citing the official claim that Zubeen was forced to consume alcohol. “Was Zubeen murdered knowingly under the supervision of the Chief Minister? These questions need clear answers,” he said.
The meeting also laid out plans for another round of discussions to consolidate the opposition alliance. Gogoi urged all opposition parties to act with restraint and discipline, stressing that unity is essential to achieve the goal of a government change. “Everyone must act responsibly and avoid actions that may disappoint the people. The opposition must remain united with a clear objective,” he added.
