The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) has expressed serious concern over the recent escalation of tensions near the Torbung-Kangvai Buffer Zone yesterday evening. According to the Council, Meitei internally displaced persons (IDPs) protesting against the ongoing Sangai Festival attempted to move forcefully towards Churachandpur, despite clear restrictions on movement. The incident prompted Central Forces to intervene, using teargas and smoke shells to prevent a potential breach of the buffer line.
In a press release, the KZC described this as part of a recurring pattern where certain Meitei groups engage in provocation and intimidation, while the Kuki-Zo community continues to maintain peace and restraint. The Council emphasized that such incidents underscore the ongoing challenges in restoring normalcy in Manipur, with one community forced to remain on defensive vigilance in the face of repeated disruptions.
“For over two and a half years, the Kuki-Zo people have protected their boundaries and maintained peace, despite repeated destabilizing attempts from the valley,” the press release stated. “It is increasingly evident that coexistence under a single administrative structure is no longer viable.”
The KZC reiterated its commitment to peace and lawful conduct while condemning all attempts to provoke conflict. The Council has called upon the Government of India to grant constitutional protection through the creation of a Union Territory for the Kuki-Zo people. According to the KZC, such a move is no longer merely a political aspiration but a vital security requirement to ensure lasting peace, stability, and protection for their community, which has faced displacement, targeted aggression, and violence over the years.
Ginza Vualzong, Secretary of Information and Publicity for the Kuki-Zo Council, urged the central government to take decisive action to protect lives and prevent Manipur from sliding back into conflict.
