Tensions flared at Bodoland University in Kokrajhar following the Assam Cabinet’s decision to accept a report from a Group of Ministers recommending Scheduled Tribe (ST) status for six communities. The announcement triggered immediate protests from tribal and student groups, highlighting strong opposition to the move.

Members of the Bodoland University Students’ Union (BUSU), along with the Coordination Committee Tribal Organisation of Assam (CCTOA) and other tribal students, staged a sit-in at the university’s main gate at Debargaon. The demonstrators blocked all entry points to the campus, demanding that the government withdraw its decision.

As a result of the blockade, all ongoing examinations at the university were cancelled. Several students who had come to appear for their exams were left waiting outside the locked gates, expressing frustration over the disruption.

Protesting students raised slogans such as “Stop ST status for six communities,” “Down with the state government,” and “Anti-tribal go back.” The slogans reflected deep anger and concern that the proposed ST status could affect indigenous rights and the identity of local tribal communities.

During the protests, the demonstrators also prevented administrative staff and university officials from entering the campus. This effectively brought university operations to a standstill, causing disruption not only to academic activities but also to routine administration.

Leaders of the protest said they would continue their demonstrations until the government reconsidered the decision. Meanwhile, university authorities have appealed for calm and sought a dialogue with student representatives to find a peaceful solution.
