‘How did Zubeen die at an MEA event?’ Gogoi challenges government in Parliament ‘How did Zubeen die at an MEA event?’ Gogoi challenges government in Parliament

In the Lok Sabha, Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday raised serious questions over the death of Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. Speaking in very clear terms, Gogoi said the people of Assam still want to know who killed Zubeen Garg and why the truth is still not out even after the Assam Chief Minister himself called it a murder.

Gogoi said Zubeen had travelled to Singapore to attend an event organised jointly by the Ministry of External Affairs and the High Commission of India. The event was official and hosted by the Government of India. Gogoi pointed out that Zubeen died there under “mysterious circumstances” and added that this has raised many unanswered questions.

The MP said the Assam Chief Minister’s statement that Zubeen’s death was “murder” has only deepened concerns. “If the Chief Minister says it is a murder, then how did such a crime happen on foreign soil during a government-organised programme? Who killed Zubeen Garg?” he asked in Parliament. Gogoi said that people in Assam are waiting for a clear reply from the government.

During his speech, Gogoi paid an emotional tribute to the late singer, calling him one of the greatest sons of Assam. He said Zubeen was not only an artist but also a humanitarian, environmentalist, wildlife lover and a strong reader of books. Gogoi said that in the 1980s and 1990s, Zubeen gave the people of Assam hope when they were going through difficult times. In recent years, he gave them moral courage and showed them how to stand united beyond religion and caste.

Gogoi told the House that Zubeen had always shown a vision of an Assam free from hate and fear. For the people of Assam, Zubeen was like their own Kanchanjanga, he added. Gogoi said that Zubeen taught people how to overcome personal struggles, and this is why his loss has left a deep void across the state.

Gogoi said the people of Assam miss Zubeen terribly and continue to demand justice. He repeated that if the state government believes there was foul play, then the country deserves to know what really happened. Gogoi said it is the duty of the government to find the truth and make it known to the people.

He also urged the Government of India to give Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian honour, to the late artist. “We request the Government of India to honour Zubeen Garg with the Bharat Ratna. The people of Assam want this. Zubeen gave his entire life to Assam and to India,” he said.

Gogoi said that the fight for justice for Zubeen Garg will continue until the truth is known. He urged the Government of India to take the matter seriously, saying that the people deserve clarity, justice and respect for the legacy of the artist they loved.
