Deputy Director of the Union Civil Aviation Ministry, Vijay Pratap Singh, reached Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati on Tuesday to take stock of the situation arising out of repeated Indigo flight cancellations and delays. His visit comes at a time when passengers in many airports, including Guwahati, have been reporting long waiting hours and sudden rescheduling of flights over the last several days.
According to officials, Singh spent time at the airport observing how operations were being managed and how passengers were coping with the disruption. He also held brief conversations with a number of passengers who had been waiting for delayed departures or trying to make alternative travel plans. Many passengers reportedly shared their difficulty and confusion as schedules changed at short notice.
Speaking to the media after the review, Singh said the Central Government’s first concern is always passenger safety and convenience. He said that the government has already taken steps to ensure that such situations do not repeat, but he admitted that passengers have gone through inconvenience over the past few days. Singh explained that a committee has already been formed to look into the matter and that the committee will soon submit a report based on its findings.
He further informed that Indigo airline authorities have refunded around ₹827 crore to passengers across the country after flight cancellations in recent weeks. Officials said the government will continue to monitor flight operations closely, especially at major airports, in order to avoid similar situations during the coming weeks when air traffic usually increases ahead of year-end travel.
