Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) Chief Executive Member and Tipra Motha leader Purna Chandra Jamatia has said that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to win the 2023 Assembly elections in Tripura because votes of the opposition parties got divided in many constituencies.
Speaking to reporters in Agartala on Tuesday, Jamatia said that the Tipra Motha Party (TMP) had fielded candidates in all 20 Scheduled Tribe-reserved constituencies during the first phase of the elections. He said that the party later decided to contest in 22 more constituencies which do not fall under the ST category. According to him, this decision ended up splitting votes in areas where both tribal and non-tribal voters live.
Jamatia said the vote division particularly affected seats where the Left parties and the Congress were fighting together. He claimed that because opposition votes did not remain united, the BJP eventually gained an advantage. “The BJP managed to win the 2023 Assembly elections because the party had contested in 42 Assembly seats. It ensured vote division among political parties, which helped it retain power,” Jamatia said while addressing the media.
He also said that the results clearly showed how vote share played a big role in deciding the outcome of the election. According to Jamatia, the party’s presence in many constituencies may not have resulted in victory for Tipra Motha everywhere, but it had a significant impact on the numbers that other parties needed.
