A major fire broke out at the SOHUM Emporia commercial complex in the ABC area of Guwahati late on Tuesday night, leaving large portions of the building completely damaged and several offices of the State Bank of India (SBI) destroyed. The incident took place around midnight, and according to early information, the fire spread very quickly across the building and soon covered all six floors, turning the situation very serious within a short period of time.
Eyewitnesses said thick smoke started coming out of the building soon after the fire erupted. As the flames continued to rise, panic spread in the locality, and many residents of nearby buildings came out in the open fearing that the fire might spread further. Firefighters and emergency services were called immediately, and fire tenders from different stations in the city reached the spot. However, by the time they arrived, the flames had already reached higher floors of the building, making the situation difficult to control.
SOHUM Emporia is known to house several commercial establishments, including multiple offices of the State Bank of India. These offices suffered heavy damage in the incident. As per preliminary assessment, important documents, cash, furniture, and other office items have been completely destroyed. Officials involved in the operation said that nothing could be removed from inside the building as the fire spread suddenly and very fast, leaving no time to save any materials.
