A political dispute has started in the Sribhumi area of 123–Karimganj North Assembly Constituency after the Congress alleged that the names of 13 Muslim Booth Level Officers (BLOs) were removed from the latest list issued by the District Commissioner’s Election Branch. The matter has led to serious questions from Congress leaders, who have called the development a “targeted move” during the ongoing voter list update.
According to the new order, released on December 6, newly appointed BLO Supervisors have been asked to take charge and attend a meeting at the Election Branch of the DC office. A total of 15 officers have been replaced. Out of them, 13 are Muslims. Congress workers have pointed out this number as a clear pattern and said that such a step cannot be seen as normal administration.
Congress leaders in the district said that the removal of Muslim BLOs was not a routine change and seems to have been done with a “specific purpose”. They alleged that only certain names were removed and that this could affect the way voter-related work is carried out in the constituency. They also claimed that similar situations are being noticed in the Special Revision of electoral rolls, where some names are reportedly missing.
The party argued that many people whose names are appearing in voter lists for many years are now being asked to prove eligibility again. Congress leaders stated that many residents working outside the district are facing problems and may lose their voting right even though rules allow them to keep their names in the voter list.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has disagreed with the charges and said that the opposition is unnecessarily creating a communal angle. BJP leader Subrata Bhattacharjee stated that the Congress should not divide government employees on the basis of religion and said that the newly appointed officers are not linked to the BJP.
He also mentioned that the list includes two Hindu officers and that government departments regularly update such postings depending on requirements. According to him, such changes take place based on administrative needs and should not be presented as a political decision.
Meanwhile, Congress leaders said that the administration should follow proper procedure while removing or correcting names. They said that the ongoing revision work should focus on including genuine voters instead of removing names without proper ground verification. Some residents have also expressed concern that their names might get removed without them being informed, especially people who work in other places.
The Congress leadership has said that if such activities continue, a large number of people may face difficulties during the upcoming elections. The party has demanded that the authorities re-examine the matter and ensure that no qualified voter is removed.
