Assam cricket has come under a serious cloud following allegations of corruption, with the Assam Cricket Association (ACA) suspending four former state players for their alleged involvement in attempts to influence matches during a national tournament. The matter has now reached the Crime Branch, marking one of the most serious crises faced by Assam cricket in recent years.
The four former players; Amit Sinha, Ishan Ahmed, Aman Tripathi and Abhishek Thakuri have been suspended with immediate effect after complaints suggested that they tried to influence and instigate members of the current Assam team during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. The tournament was held in Lucknow between November 26 and December 8.
According to the ACA, the allegations came to light during the course of the tournament, raising concerns within the team management and cricket authorities. Given the seriousness of the claims, the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) was informed and asked to conduct a preliminary enquiry.
Following the enquiry, the ACA said there was prima facie evidence indicating serious misconduct by the four former players. The association described the allegations as grave, saying they strike at the very foundation of fair play and integrity in the sport.
Taking action, the Assam Cricket Association imposed an immediate suspension on all four accused individuals. In a further step, the association also initiated criminal proceedings. An FIR was lodged with the Crime Branch in Guwahati on Friday, December 12, officially bringing law-enforcement agencies into the investigation.
In a statement, the ACA said the suspension was necessary to prevent any further damage to the game. “The suspension has been enforced to prevent any further deterioration of the situation and to protect the sanctity of the game,” the association said, making its zero-tolerance approach clear.
During the suspension period, the four former players have been barred from taking part in any cricketing activity under the Assam Cricket Association. This includes participation in state-level tournaments, district matches, and games organised by ACA-affiliated clubs. They have also been prohibited from being involved in any cricket-related role, including coaching, officiating, umpiring, or mentoring in academies.
