Tezpur University has formally urged the Ministry of Education to issue an immediate and clear response regarding the initiation of a time-bound enquiry against Professor Shambhu Nath Singh, as uncertainty continues to affect normal life on the campus.
In an official communication, the Registrar (in-charge) of Tezpur University, Chandan Goswami, wrote to the Ministry highlighting the assurances given during a recent high-level visit and expressing concern over the absence of any formal follow-up so far. The letter points to a growing sense of unrest among teachers, staff and students, with the university administration seeking clarity to restore stability.
According to the Registrar, a senior team from the Ministry of Education visited Tezpur University on December 6, 2025, to review the prevailing situation. The team included Vineet Joshi, Secretary, Department of Higher Education; Saumya Gupta, Joint Secretary, Higher Education; and Karanjit Singh Ngangbam, Director, Higher Education. During the visit, the Ministry officials held a meeting with representatives of the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association (TUTA), the Tezpur University Non-Teaching Employees’ Association (TUNTEA), and members of the student community.
At the meeting, the stakeholders jointly submitted an urgent demand for the initiation of an official and time-bound enquiry against Professor Shambhu Nath Singh. The Registrar’s letter states that this demand was formally recorded in the minutes of the meeting held with the Ministry officials.
The communication further notes that during the interaction, Joint Secretary Saumya Gupta verbally assured the university authorities and stakeholders that the Ministry would convey its decision by Tuesday, December 9, 2025. In addition to this verbal assurance, the Ministry was said to have provided a written note assuring stakeholders that the matter would be addressed.
However, the Registrar has pointed out that despite the passage of several days, no formal communication or decision has been received from the Ministry. This delay, the letter suggests, has added to the uncertainty on campus and has made it difficult for the university administration to manage the situation effectively.
Goswami requested the Ministry to issue an official response by Saturday, December 13, 2025, clearly stating its decision on the assurances given during the December 6 visit. The Registrar stressed that timely communication is essential to help restore normal academic and administrative functioning at Tezpur University.
