Two more Bangladeshi nationals have been granted Indian citizenship in Assam under the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019, marking another important step in the implementation of the law in the state. With this, the total number of Bangladeshi Hindu nationals who have received Indian citizenship under the Act in Assam has now risen to four.

According to sources, both the newly granted citizens are residents of the Barak Valley region. One of them is a woman with the surname Banerjee from Badarpur in Sribhumi district, while the other is a 61-year-old man with the surname Goswami from Silchar town in Cachar district.

Legal sources said the woman’s case is significant, as she has become the first person in Assam to receive Indian citizenship through marriage under the CAA using the registration process. Advocate Dharmananda Deb, who assisted both applicants with their legal procedures, confirmed that the citizenship certificates were issued on Friday.

The advocate explained that the woman is originally from Chattogram in Bangladesh. She entered India in 2007 when she came to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for the treatment of a family member. During her stay in the region, she came in contact with a doctor from Badarpur, and the two later got married. After the CAA came into force, she applied for Indian citizenship under the provisions related to marriage and was granted citizenship after due process.

The second beneficiary is a 61-year-old Bangladeshi Hindu man who entered India in 1975 from Moulvibazar district of Bangladesh along with his family. He later settled permanently in Silchar and has been living there for several decades. Following the enactment of the CAA, he applied for Indian citizenship and was also granted citizenship on Friday.

It is noteworthy that all four Bangladeshi Hindu nationals who have so far received Indian citizenship under the CAA in Assam are residents of the Barak Valley.
