Students of Tezpur University on Monday observed a nine-hour hunger strike demanding immediate action from the Union Ministry of Education (MoE), before formally calling off the protest in the evening.
More than 200 students from various departments participated in the hunger strike, which was held from 9 am to 6 pm on the university campus. The protest was organised to press for the removal of Vice-Chancellor Professor Shambhu Nath Singh amid allegations of corruption and financial irregularities. The students said the hunger strike was peaceful and disciplined, aimed at drawing attention to their long-pending demands.
After the protest concluded as scheduled, student representatives clarified that the hunger strike had ended but their movement was far from over. They said the action reflected growing dissatisfaction over what they described as continued delay and lack of accountability from the Ministry of Education, despite multiple visits by officials to the university to collect facts and documents related to the case.
According to the students, the Ministry has recently conveyed through a WhatsApp message that an official resolution on the matter is likely to be issued on Friday. While this message has given some hope, students said they remain cautious, recalling earlier verbal and informal assurances that did not lead to any concrete outcome.
Student leaders stated that the prolonged uncertainty has disrupted academic and administrative functioning on campus. They said repeated delays have created frustration among students and teachers alike, with no clarity on when the issue will be resolved.
