Members of the Youth TIPRA Federation (YTF), which is the youth wing of the Tipra Motha Party (TMP), staged a protest on Wednesday outside the Bangladesh Assistant High Commission office in Agartala. The protest was held in response to recent remarks reportedly made by leaders in Bangladesh about the Northeast region of India.
According to the YTF, the statements made by Bangladeshi leaders over the last few days have caused concern among the organisation’s members. The protestors gathered near the commission building and raised slogans expressing their objection to the comments. They held placards and demanded that no foreign leader should make comments that could create confusion or tension in the Northeastern states.
YTF president Suraj Debbarma addressed the protestors and spoke to reporters present at the site. He said the organisation had decided to stage the demonstration after hearing repeated remarks from Bangladeshi leaders regarding the Northeast.
“We are protesting today because for the last two to three days, Bangladeshi leaders have been making statements about the Northeast,” Debbarma said. He added that the people of the region were responsible citizens of India and that they had a duty to safeguard their land. “We are responsible citizens of India, and it is our duty to protect our land and our country,” he said.
