In Goalpara district, a resident received an unusually high electricity bill of Rs 1.29 lakh for just one month.
The incident took place in Fakirganj area. The consumer, identified as Sahab Uddin from Dhapanpara village collected his latest power bill and was stunned to see the amount written on it. According to him, the bill showed a charge of Rs 1,29,074 for one month’s electricity consumption. He said that such a huge amount is completely unexpected and beyond his capacity to pay.
Local residents said that Sahab Uddin is an ordinary person. He previously operated a small ice factory. During that time, his monthly power bills used to be between Rs 2,800 and Rs 3,000. He also maintained a clean payment record, clearing dues regularly without delay. However, he informed neighbours that the ice factory has remained closed in winter this year. In this situation, a bill of more than one lakh rupees without prior information has caused panic in the community.
People in the area have started raising questions about transparency and reliability in the billing system. Many said that such errors or unexplained bills weaken public trust in electricity authorities. The incident has also created fear among local consumers, who are now worried about unexpected charges.
After receiving the bill, Sahab Uddin submitted a written complaint to the Sub-Divisional Officer of the Lakhipur electricity sub-division. He requested verification of the meter reading and correction of the bill. However, officials reportedly told him to deposit 50 percent of the total amount while the complaint is processed. Sahab Uddin refused to do so and described the demand as unfair and unreasonable.
He said that unless the bill is corrected and a proper inquiry is carried out, he will not pay any part of the amount. He also warned that he may take legal action if a satisfactory solution is not provided soon.
