A protest was organised by the All BTC Minority Students’ Union (ABMSU) at Dwarkuchi in Tamulpur on the Rangia–Bhutan International Highway on Saturday, where members of the organisation burnt an effigy of Bangladesh’s interim government Prime Minister Muhammad Yunus.

The protest was held to condemn alleged atrocities and torture against minority Hindus in Bangladesh. ABMSU members gathered near the roadside and set the effigy on fire in public. They carried banners and placards, demanding the Bangladesh government stop violence against minority Hindus.

Several demonstrators raised slogans such as “Long live ABMSU”, “Stop atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh”, “Shame on Bangladesh Government”. The slogans echoed across the highway and drew the attention of passers-by. Local residents were seen stopping on the road to see the protest.

The protesters said that security of minority Hindus in Bangladesh is a serious concern. They demanded that India take diplomatic steps to raise the issue. The members of ABMSU said the situation in Bangladesh needs urgent attention from both governments.

During the protest programme, ABMSU president Taison Hussain addressed the gathering. He said that violence against minorities cannot be accepted. He also said that Islam does not encourage such actions.

Taison Hussain said, “Islam never encourages violence against Hindus. Minority people of Assam as well as India will never tolerate atrocities against minorities in Bangladesh.”

He further added that the Muslim community of Assam and India does not support anti-India activities carried out from Bangladesh. According to him, minority communities in India stand with the minorities of Bangladesh who are facing difficulties.

Hussain said, “Wherever atrocities are committed against minorities, we will stand there. We cannot close our eyes when injustice happens.”
