Tension flared in West Karbi Anglong on Monday after enraged protesters allegedly set fire to the residence of Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council, Tuliram Ronghang, hours after police opened fire to disperse a crowd.
According to local sources, security forces resorted to firing following a confrontation with demonstrators earlier in the day. The incident reportedly intensified anger among protesters, who marched to Ronghang’s official residence and torched portions of the building. Visuals circulating on social media appeared to show flames and smoke rising from the compound.
The unrest arises from the forceful removal of indigenous protesters who had been on a hunger strike for 15 days at Felangpi. The eviction triggered large-scale road blockades at the Kheroni (Thong Nokbe) Bridge, disrupting vehicular movement and heightening tensions in the region.
