The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has constituted an expert committee to closely monitor the legal proceedings related to the death of noted Assamese singer Zubeen Garg in Singapore. The decision has been taken independently by the association with the aim of ensuring proper legal oversight of the case at every stage.

According to the association, the expert committee will monitor the criminal case registered in connection with the incident, the case being handled by the Enforcement Directorate, as well as three public interest litigations currently pending before the Gauhati High Court. The committee has also been empowered to take timely and appropriate decisions related to the developments in these cases.

Announcing the formation of the committee, All Assam Lawyers’ Association president Shailen Dasa and general secretary Dipak Kumar Das stated that the body would extend full cooperation to the prosecution whenever required. They said the initiative reflects the association’s commitment to ensuring that due legal process is followed and justice is pursued in a fair and transparent manner.

Several senior advocates have been appointed as advisers to the committee, including Kamal Agarwala, David Lazar, Shailendra Das, Ajit Borgohain, Jiaul Kamar, Anand Kumar Bhunya, Manas Saraniya, Ramesh Kumar Jain and Bijon Kumar Mahajan. Dipak Kumar Das and Shantam Khaund have been named as conveners, while seven advocates have been included as members of the expert panel.

The association also expressed gratitude to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for what it described as prompt action in the matter. It noted that a Special Investigation Team had filed charge sheets against all the accused within the stipulated time.
