The Assam government on Tuesday ordered the suspension of mobile internet services in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts following reports of a serious law and order situation that emerged during the day.
According to an official notification issued by the Government of Assam, district authorities informed the state administration about growing tension and the possibility of a breach of public peace in the two hill districts. Based on these reports, the government expressed concern that social media and mobile internet could be misused to circulate rumours, provocative messages, or misleading information, which could further worsen the situation.
In order to maintain public peace and prevent any escalation, the Home and Political Department directed all mobile service providers to immediately suspend internet and mobile data services in both districts. The order has been issued under the provisions of the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, read with the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services Rules, 2017.
The government also warned that any violation of the order would attract legal action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, as well as relevant sections of the Indian Telegraph Act.
