Raijor Dal president and MLA Akhil Gogoi launched a sharp attack on the BJP-led Assam government following the recent violence and unrest in Karbi Anglong district, holding the state Home Department and the Assam Police responsible for what he described as a complete administrative failure.
Gogoi appealed to the people of Karbi Anglong to maintain peace and avoid taking the law into their own hands. At the same time, he strongly criticised the authorities for failing to understand and manage the ground situation despite clear warning signs.
He said the developments in Karbi Anglong had exposed the inability of the Assam Police and the Home Department to assess the seriousness of the situation in time. According to Gogoi, the unrest could have been prevented if timely steps had been taken.
Gogoi revealed that around midnight on Monday, he had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, warning that the situation in Karbi Anglong was likely to escalate. Despite this, he alleged, no effective preventive measures were taken by the administration.
“The situation clearly shows that the Assam Police had no control on the ground. The Home Department failed completely, even after knowing everything in advance,” Gogoi said.
He claimed that protests in the area had been peaceful and democratic for nearly two weeks, but police action late at night only aggravated tensions. He also alleged that the Chief Executive Member of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council did not visit the protest site or attempt dialogue with the demonstrators.
According to Gogoi, protesters had even indicated on social media that they might march towards the residence of the CEM, yet adequate security arrangements were not made. “The police failed on two fronts; they could neither protect innocent protesters nor safeguard a government leader,” he said.
The Raijor Dal leader alleged that whenever people protest against the BJP government, they are met with detention and harassment instead of dialogue. Holding the government responsible for the unrest, he demanded compensation for those who allegedly suffered loss of property.
Questioning the government’s claims of protecting indigenous communities, Gogoi asked why talks were never initiated with the protesters. He further demanded that Himanta Biswa Sarma resign from the post of Home Minister, stating that the Karbi Anglong incident reflected a serious failure of leadership and governance.
