A wave of anger and grief was seen on Wednesday at the Lalangdubi Forest Market in Lanka area of Hojai district, where a large number of people gathered to protest against the death of a physically disabled man during the recent violence in Karbi Anglong.

The protest was organised in response to the killing of Suraj Dey, a specially-abled person who was burnt alive inside his house during the violent incident that took place in West Karbi Anglong a day earlier. Protesters said the incident was deeply disturbing and could not be ignored under any circumstances.

Holding placards and raising slogans, the protesters demanded justice for the deceased and financial compensation for his family. They said Suraj Dey’s death was not just a personal tragedy but a serious failure of law and order. Many protesters said that the fact that a disabled person was unable to escape and died trapped inside his own home made the incident even more painful.

Several speakers at the protest made it clear that people living in the area do not support violence in the name of land protection or any other cause. Members of the non-Assamese community present at the protest openly stated that such acts of violence only bring suffering to innocent people and damage social harmony. They said no movement or demand can justify the killing of a helpless person.

The protest was held at Lalangdubi Forest Market in the Lanka area of Hojai district, drawing participation from local residents, traders, and community members. The atmosphere remained tense but peaceful, with protesters urging the authorities to take firm action against those responsible for the violence.

Protesters warned that if such violent incidents continue in the future, they would be left with no option but to intensify their agitation. They said repeated incidents of violence are creating fear among ordinary people and disrupting normal life in the region.
