The United Liberation Front of Asom – Independent (ULFA-I) has issued a new statement saying that the group does not accept the Indian Constitution and will continue its demand for an independent and sovereign Assam. The statement, dated December 25, was circulated to the media and called on Assamese people to unite.

In the statement, ULFA-I claimed that the identity and dignity of the indigenous people of Assam are under threat. The group alleged that efforts are being made to portray Assamese people as “Chinese-origin tribes,” which it described as deeply insulting and unacceptable. The outfit said this kind of propaganda hurts the pride of the Assamese community.

ULFA-I also said that the Indian Constitution and law are “colonial tools” meant to suppress the people of Assam. The organisation stated that it will not recognise these laws and will instead continue to fight for what it calls a “sovereign and independent Assam.”

The group added that, in its view, armed struggle remains the only way to protect the future and existence of Assamese people. It warned that if the identity of the indigenous people is not protected, Assamese language and culture could face serious danger in the future.

The outfit further appealed to the people of Assam to stay alert against outside influence. It urged citizens not to support those who try to weaken Assamese nationalism. ULFA-I said it will continue to support anyone who stands for an independent Assam.
