A large group of women gathered in Chamaria under the Boko-Chaygaon constituency on Friday to protest what they say is unfair exclusion from the government’s Udyamita scheme. The protest took place at the Ram Saraswati playground, where the women said they had been promised financial support but were later left out of the final beneficiary list.
According to the protesting women, nearly 500 applicants from the Chamaria Development Block did not receive the ₹10,000 financial assistance that is given under the Udyamita scheme. Many of them said they had completed all the required formalities and had waited patiently for months, only to find their names missing when the funds were released.
Their frustration grew after they learned that a large number of beneficiaries from the nearby Sontoli Char area had already received the money. This difference in distribution has raised doubts among the women, who now question whether the selection process was carried out in a fair and transparent manner.
On Friday, the women took out a peaceful protest march on public roads, carrying placards and raising slogans. They appealed directly to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to look into the matter and make sure that all eligible women receive the support that was promised to them. They also demanded an official inquiry into how so many names were left out and who was responsible for the lapse.
Some of the women said the financial support was very important for them, as they had planned to use the money to start or expand small businesses. They expressed concern that being excluded from the scheme would put them at a disadvantage compared to others who had already received help.
It is worth noting that the Chief Minister is scheduled to distribute cheques to Udyamita beneficiaries on January 4 at Gandhi Maidan in Boko. The protesting women said they hope their grievances will be addressed before that event, so that they are not forced to stand aside while others receive benefits meant for citizens across the region.
