Human rights organisation Manab Adhikar Sangram Samiti (MASS) has strongly condemned the brutal killing of Tripura student Angel Chakma, calling the incident an inhuman crime that has deeply disturbed people across the North East.
In a press release issued on Monday, MASS president Bubumoni Goswami said the organisation was shocked by the circumstances leading to the death of the young MBA student. He said that every citizen of India has the right to safety and dignity, and those responsible for such crimes must face strict legal punishment.
The organisation demanded that the culprits be punished severely so that such incidents do not happen again. Goswami said the rule of law exists to protect every citizen, and justice must be ensured for the victim and her family.
The MASS statement also expressed concern over what it described as a negative and discriminatory attitude faced by many people from the North Eastern states when they travel or work in other parts of the country. The organisation said this attitude often leads to misunderstanding, social division and, in some cases, serious crime.
Calling the trend “worrying,” MASS appealed to the Union Government to take effective steps to change the mindset of people towards the communities of the North East, especially those belonging to Mongoloid ethnic backgrounds. The organisation said the government must work to ensure that students and workers from the region feel safe and respected wherever they go in India.
MASS stated that many young people from the North East move to different states for education and employment. According to MASS, it is the responsibility of the government and society to make sure that they are not subjected to discrimination, harassment or racial prejudice.
The organisation urged authorities to strengthen awareness programmes promoting unity and equality among citizens. It also called on law enforcement agencies to act firmly in cases involving racial abuse, hate-motivated violence or harassment.
MASS further appealed to the public to recognise that the North East is an integral part of the country, with its own cultures, languages and traditions that should be respected like any other.
