A special court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Guwahati has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for creating a module of a Pakistan-based terror organisation in Assam. The man, identified as Md Kamruj Zaman, also known as Kamaruddin, was found guilty of trying to set up a network to carry out terror-related activities in the state.

The agency said the sentencing order was issued on Wednesday. Zaman received three separate punishments under the anti-terror law, with the maximum sentence being life imprisonment. The court ruled that all sentences would run at the same time. He was also fined ₹5,000 in each of the three offences, and he will have to undergo three months of simple imprisonment for each fine if he fails to pay.

According to the NIA, Zaman worked to raise a local module of the banned Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) during 2017 and 2018. The agency said the plan behind the conspiracy was to spread fear and disturb peace in the region.

Investigators stated that Zaman recruited several young men, including Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam and Omar Faruk, as part of the network. The NIA filed a chargesheet in March 2019 against five people linked to the case.

Out of the accused, Sahnawaz, Saidul and Omar later pleaded guilty in court and were convicted earlier. Another accused, Jaynal Uddin, passed away due to illness while the trial was still going on.
