Garima Saikia Garg, wife of popular singer and actor Zubeen Garg, has said that the accused in the case showed no sign of regret when she saw them during court proceedings. Speaking on January 3, she said the accused appeared “extremely confident” and that there was “no trace of guilt” on their faces.

Garima said she observed the accused from a distance and felt disturbed by their behaviour. Calling for strict action, she said the harshest possible punishment should be given. “They are demons and must be punished,” she said, expressing strong emotion over the matter.

She also urged the Assam government to set up a dedicated special court for the trial. Garima said a team of Special Public Prosecutors should be appointed so that the case can move forward in a proper, organised and effective manner. She stressed that such a step was necessary given the seriousness of the case involving her husband.

Her comments came on the same day the Gauhati Lawyers Association said it was closely following the developments in court. The association has also demanded a special court and a team of Special Public Prosecutors, stating that the case involves a large volume of documents and legal complexities.

Association general secretary Apurba Kumar Sharma said January 3 had been fixed for the consideration of charges. The court took up the charge hearing as well as a bail petition filed for accused Amritprabha. In the case of another accused, Siddharth Sharma, a private advocate from Kolkata joined the proceedings virtually and requested more time for the hearing, saying the charge sheet was extremely lengthy.

Sharma further said that the counsel for accused Shyamkanu Mahanta, also appearing from Kolkata, asked for more time after informing the court that some documents were missing from the pen drive supplied to the defence. The court agreed and granted time in both matters.

Advocates were also present on behalf of other accused persons, including Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, Sandeepan Garg, Nandeswar Bora and Paresh Baishya. Some of them are being represented by lawyers appointed under the District Legal Services Authority. Bail petitions were placed on their behalf, but these were opposed by the government advocate and the Public Prosecutor, who sought time to file written objections.

According to Sharma, several petitions were also filed seeking permission for virtual appearance from Kolkata and other forms of relief. These were opposed by the prosecution. The court has now fixed January 17, 2026 for the next hearing. On that day, the accused are expected to appear virtually from the jails where they are currently lodged.

Highlighting the scale of the case, Sharma said the charge sheet runs to almost 12,000 pages. He said it would be extremely difficult for a single Public Prosecutor to go through such a large record while also handling other court duties and responding to bail and related petitions.

Because of this, the Gauhati Lawyers Association has demanded the formation of a special first-class court to hear the case on a daily basis. It has also asked for the appointment of at least ten Special Public Prosecutors to handle the matter. Sharma said these steps were essential to ensure that the trial proceeds smoothly and justice is delivered without unnecessary delay.
