A strong earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale shook several parts of Assam in the early hours of Monday. The tremor was recorded at 4:17 am IST with its epicentre in Morigaon district, according to data shared by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 50 kilometres, located at 26.37°N latitude and 92.29°E longitude. The tremor was felt not only in Morigaon but also across central Assam and nearby areas. People in parts of Meghalaya, including Shillong, also reported light shaking.
Residents in many places said they felt the ground move for a few seconds. Some people stepped out of their homes in fear, especially since the tremor came during the early morning hours when most people were asleep. The weather at the time was cold and foggy, which added to the unease among residents.
So far, there have been no reports of injuries or major damage to property. Authorities said monitoring is continuing and people have been advised to stay alert and follow basic safety guidelines in case of aftershocks.
The epicentre lies near the Kopili fault zone, an area known for frequent seismic activity. Northeast India, including Assam, falls in one of the highest seismic risk zones in the country, which means earthquakes of various intensities are not uncommon in the region.
At present, normal life continues across Assam, and there is no major disruption reported from any district. However, residents remain cautious after the early morning tremor.
