Leader of the Opposition in the Assam Assembly and senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has written a formal letter to the Chief Election Commissioner of India, raising strong objections to serious discrepancies in the ongoing Special Revision of the electoral rolls in Assam. While submitting his complaint, Saikia specifically cited a news report published by Northeast Scoop which highlighted fake and unknown voter entries in Guwahati.

In his letter, Saikia said that the draft voter list published on December 27, 2025 already shows worrying signs of irregularities. He said that names of people who do not live in certain households have been added to the voter rolls without the knowledge of genuine residents. He warned that this not only violates rules but also raises doubts about the fairness of the entire electoral process in Assam.

The Northeast Scoop report that Saikia referred to exposed one such case in Taibullah Path near Dighali Pukhuri in Guwahati, where the family of Abdul Munin Choudhary discovered that four to five completely unrelated people had been added to their House No. 46 address in the official voter list. These individuals, named as Tinku Prasad, Rinku Prasad, Neha Shah, Phul Devi and Anjana Boruah, have no connection to the family or locality. The genuine residents say they do not even know who these people are.

Saikia also stated that in his Nazira constituency, fake entries are appearing under non-existent address labels such as “household no. 00.” He said that no such address exists in the constituency and that this clearly shows a complete failure in verification. He added that this creates serious doubt about the integrity and authenticity of the electoral roll.

The Congress leader pointed out that although more than 10 lakh names have already been deleted from the draft roll, the presence of such fake and unknown entries shows that verification remains weak. He also recalled that during the Assembly session, the state government had claimed there was nothing to worry about. However, he said the facts now emerging including the Northeast Scoop report contradict those assurances.

Calling the situation a threat to democracy, Saikia urged the Election Commission of India to carry out a transparent investigation, stop finalising the voter rolls until fake entries are removed and strengthen verification procedures across the state. He said elections are the foundation of democracy and public trust must not be compromised.
