The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) has expressed serious concern over voter list irregularities, the growing problems faced by farmers, and the delay in implementing Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. These issues were discussed at the organisation’s executive committee meeting held at Vivekananda Kendra in Uzan Bazar.

The meeting was attended by AASU Chief Adviser Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya, President Utpal Sarma, General Secretary Samiran Phukan, and other senior office-bearers.

Speaking to the media, AASU President Utpal Sarma questioned how “unknown and ineligible individuals” had been included in Assam’s voter list. He said that preparing electoral rolls in a sensitive state like Assam is a matter of great responsibility and warned that such lapses cannot be ignored.

Sarma said that accountability must be fixed and the government must clarify whether any officials responsible for the mistakes have faced action.

AASU General Secretary Samiran Phukan highlighted the worsening situation of farmers, especially potato growers in Upper Assam. He said many farmers are being forced to dump their produce because of the absence of cold storage facilities and lack of fair market access.

According to him, potatoes are being thrown away in large quantities in places like Sadiya. He added that farmers are often blamed when they do not work, but even when they work hard, they are not receiving a fair price for their crops. Phukan said the potato trade is largely controlled by non-Assamese traders, while local Assamese traders and farmers continue to face difficulties in entering or surviving in the market.

Phukan also said that AASU wants immediate talks with the Central government regarding Clause 6 of the Assam Accord. He stressed that the discussions have been pending for too long and need to move forward without further delay.

AASU Chief Adviser Dr. Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyya strongly raised the demand for justice in the death of artist Zubeen Garg, stating that the charge sheet has clearly described the case as murder. He said those responsible must be punished and justice must be ensured.

Bhattacharyya urged the Assam government to set up a special court for the case and appoint a team of senior and experienced lawyers as public prosecutors so that the case is handled firmly and professionally.
