Tension continued in Kokrajhar following a dramatic incident involving the accused in the rape case of a mentally ill girl, after police said the man tried to escape from custody.

According to police sources, the accused, Rafiqul Islam, who was recently arrested in connection with the case, attempted to flee while he was in police custody. The incident reportedly took place in the Ranighuli area when Rafiqul was being escorted by police personnel to attend to nature’s call.

Police said that during the escape attempt, the accused allegedly assaulted two police constables after snatching their service weapons. The two policemen sustained injuries to their hands and legs while trying to restrain him. Officials said the situation quickly turned tense, forcing the police to act to prevent further danger.

“In self-defence and to stop the accused from escaping, police opened fire,” a senior police official said. Rafiqul Islam was hit in his left leg during the firing.

He was immediately taken to RNB Civil Hospital, where he was given first aid. Due to the nature of his injury, he was later referred to Kokrajhar Medical College for further treatment. His condition was stated to be stable.

Police officials said that adequate security arrangements have been put in place following the incident, as the situation in Kokrajhar remains sensitive. Additional forces have been deployed in key areas to maintain law and order.

The rape case has already triggered protests and public anger in the district, and the administration has appealed to people to remain calm and allow the law to take its course. Police also confirmed that a detailed inquiry into the escape attempt and firing incident will be conducted as per procedure.
