Jiban Chutia, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from Sarupathar in Golaghat district, has resigned from the party’s primary and active membership with immediate effect.

In a resignation letter dated January 12, 2026, Chutia addressed the State President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Assam Pradesh, informing the party leadership of his decision to step down. In the letter, he stated that he was tendering his resignation from the party and requested the leadership to accept it and relieve him of all party responsibilities.

The resignation comes at a time when the BJP in Assam has already witnessed major exits in recent months. In one of the biggest setbacks to the party ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, senior leader and former Union Minister Rajen Gohain resigned from the BJP on October 9, 2025, along with 17 other members. Gohain, a four-time Member of Parliament from the Nagaon constituency and a former Assam BJP president, submitted his resignation at the party’s Guwahati headquarters, citing long-standing grievances within the organisation. The mass exit was seen as one of the largest from the Assam BJP since it came to power in 2016, reflecting growing internal dissatisfaction within the party.

Gohain had stated that his decision was driven by what he described as the party’s departure from its core principles and the sidelining of senior leaders in favour of new entrants. He had also accused the BJP of failing to protect indigenous Assamese interests, particularly in connection with the 2023 delimitation exercise, which he claimed reduced the political voice of communities such as the Ahom. Gohain further alleged that the increasing influence of outsiders had weakened the party’s bond with grassroots workers and the promises made to the people of Assam.
