Veteran Assamese singer Samar Hazarika, the younger brother of legendary music maestro Bhupen Hazarika, passed away late on Monday night at his residence in Nijarapara. He was unwell for a long period and was undergoing treatment, family sources said.

The news of his death came on Uruka, a day usually marked by celebration, but it instead brought deep sorrow to the cultural and music community of Assam. With his passing, Assamese music has lost a soft-spoken artist who remained deeply connected to melody and tradition throughout his life.

Samar Hazarika began his musical journey in 1960. Though he stayed away from the limelight for much of his career, he made a quiet yet meaningful contribution to Assamese music. He lent his voice to several Assamese films and recorded multiple albums, which were well received by listeners of the time.

Unlike many contemporary performers, Samar Hazarika believed in simplicity and emotion in music. Those who knew him recall his calm nature and deep respect for music as a form of service rather than fame.
