The death of a Hindu man in Bangladesh’s Feni district has once again brought focus on the safety of religious minorities in the country, drawing reactions from political leaders in India while local police said an investigation is underway.
The victim has been identified as Shomir Kumar Das, a resident of the Daganbhuiyan area in Feni. According to police, Das left his home on the night of January 11 after 8 pm, driving his autorickshaw, which was his only means of earning a livelihood. When he did not return home, family members grew worried. His body was later found around 2 am, police officials said.
The police recovered the body after receiving information from locals and registered a case in connection with the incident. Feni police chief Shafiqul Islam said that no arrests have been made so far and that efforts are continuing to identify those involved in the killing. He added that the case is being investigated from all possible angles.
The incident triggered a sharp political response from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised the interim government in Bangladesh, alleging that repeated attacks on religious minorities were not being addressed seriously.
In a post on X, Malviya claimed that the authorities had failed to act against those targeting Hindus and other minority communities, including Christians and Buddhists. He alleged that the leadership had downplayed such incidents and had not even offered words of sympathy to the affected families. He described the situation as worrying and said it sent a disturbing message to minority communities.
Malviya also alleged that Das’s autorickshaw was looted after the killing, adding to the family’s loss. He linked the incident to what he described as growing fear among Hindus in Bangladesh. In the same post, Malviya made political remarks about Mamata Banerjee, drawing a comparison with past incidents in West Bengal.
