One more person has been arrested in connection with the murder of social activist Dilseng M. Sangma in Meghalaya, taking the total number of arrests in the case to four, police officials confirmed on January 13. The arrest was made after sustained raids carried out at different locations as the investigation gathered pace.
Dilseng Sangma, a leader of a Garo organisation, was attacked on January 9 in the Rajabala area of West Garo Hills district. According to officials, he had gone to the area along with several other activists after suspecting illegal stone quarrying activities in the region. During the visit, the group was allegedly confronted by miscreants, leading to a violent assault. Dilseng Sangma later succumbed to his injuries, while another activist who was with him suffered serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment.
Police suspect that the attack was carried out by individuals allegedly backed by illegal stone quarry operators. Superintendent of Police A.T. Sangma said the latest arrest was made on Monday and that three other accused had already been taken into custody earlier. He added that the investigation is progressing steadily and further arrests cannot be ruled out as police continue to identify everyone involved in the crime.
The killing led to tension in parts of West Garo Hills district, prompting authorities to deploy additional security forces in sensitive areas. Peace committee meetings were also held to prevent any escalation and to maintain law and order.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma strongly condemned the killing and assured that all those responsible would be brought to justice. He appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperate with the authorities as the investigation continues.
